Week 5: Comparison Essays

Remember, a full draft of your diagnostic revision is due Tuesday, September 20 by 11:59pm. Please name this document LastName_DiagnosticFullEdit.docx.

The next unit for this class deals with comparison, which means to look at the similarities and differences of two things, places, ideas, times, etc. Later today we will do some peer review of our diagnostic essays.

Look at the pictures your teacher is showing you. Come up with about five differences between these two pictures.

Get into groups of 2 or 3 and write down ways in which these two pictures are similar. Each group will then share answers with the class orally. These are examples of comparisons, which are expressions of how two or more things are similar to each other.

You will need to come up with about five differences from those pictures. Write down ways in which these two pictures are different. Each group will then share answers with the class orally. These descriptions of how things are different are called contrasts.

7. Now consider the following sentence, "The University of Illinois has a large international population like New York does." Is this a comparison or a contrast? How can you tell? Pay attention to key words in the sentence like the word "like" in the example. What are some other words that can signal a comparison?

8. We will work with the list of comparison words in the Compare and Contrast Signals document and go over some examples as a class. You will then do comparison exercises on the Compare and Contrast Signals document.

9. Now consider the sentence, "The University of Illinois has a large international student population whereas Northern Illinois University does not." Is it a comparison or a contrast? How can you tell that the sentence is a contrast? Pay attention to key words in the sentence like the word "whereas" in the example. What are some other words that can signal a contrast?

10. We will work with the list of contrasting words in the Compare and Contrast Signals document and go over some examples as a class. You will then work through some contrast exercises on the Compare and Contrast Signals document.
