Difference between quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing and citing
Get into groups and think about what the difference is between quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Also, talk about when you should cite.
Paraphrasing exercise
Work on the Paraphrasing activity sheet. You might want to use synonyms and change the sentence structure while you paraphrase. After you are done, share your paraphrases with other students.
Review the 3 different styles of citation
Talk about what you have researched the other day. You will be focusing on APA style today and you will be using the APA style for your assignments.
In-text citation
Look at the In-text citation handout.
First, what are the 2 different kinds of citation? Now go over part 2 of the handout and find common elements in the citations. There are various ways to introduce the quote or paraphrase (signal phrases). Also look at the last example, which show you how to quote longer material.
In-text citation: interview
Look at Part 3 of the in-text citation handout. Pair up, and interview each other about “why plagiarism is bad”. Based on the interview, write a sentence with a signal phrase and proper citation.
